Hello all.....
Searched the archives but did not find any good conversations regarding soundproofing an engine compartment. While relitavely quiet, my insulation is crumbling from its 26 years of service and I feel its time to replace. I am figuring a 1 inch thickness.... Defender sells two different kinds made by same company"Soundown". Was wondering what experience and products sailors here have used.

Thanks!

soundproofing

I used the soundproofing from sailors solutions on my old ODay 30. It comes in about 1 foot squares and is a peel off and stick on one side. I ordered the squares and cut and stuck them around the engine enclosure. It made a big difference, was easy to put on. Current boat is already quiet. (C34)

I put Soundown in my generator compartment. I used the material that was foil-backed foam with a heavy lead sheet in the middle of it. The improvement was dramatic. I used two different thicknesses- I think it was 1.5" and 3/4" - I used the thicker wherever I could and the thinner everywhere else. I think the lead sheet, which was recommended for diesel applications, lowered the noise significantly.

This compartment was a cockpit lazarrete area and it could not be sealed well with the insulation since combustion and electrical-end cooling air had to enter the space. Even so, the improvement changed from obnoxious noise to being able to hold a normal conversation in the cockpit.

Terry's right. Get the SPM soundproofing tiles from Sailors Solutions at http://www.sailorssolutions.com/. A quality product that works great and is very easy to apply. Unless you've pulled your engine, it's a thousand percent easier to work with the 12" square self stick tiles than try to cut and place the large sheets that most other sound absorbing material comes in.

How many tiles and what reduction in sound for 356?

Robert: How many tiles did you order for your 356 and where did you put them? Also, how much sound reduction did you achieve?

I would like to drop my engine noise significantly. My generator has a sound enclosure and is very quiet, but when running, it is fairly noisy in the salon and I would like to quiet it down for my wife's comfort. Did you also re-sound proof the moveable enclosure?

Thanks for the input.

We bought the large soundproofing kit when we rebuilt our engine enclosure for our H336 this past winter (not a 356, sorry). We ended up with about six tiles left over, which I should probably try to sell to someone as they're not doing us any good. They seem to work well enough, but I can't really say they're that much quieter than the sound insulation that came from the factory. The problem was that the old stuff got destroyed during removal and there was no way to reuse it (plus it was oil soaked) and I needed something I could apply while working around the engine. There was no practical way to have done it with those large continous sheets that you have to template and cut to shape.
