Sound insulation

We have an older fiberglass boat and a diesel engine and little insulation in the engine compartment. Has anyone used pink ridgid foam insulation panels glued to the sides and cover of the lazerette to absorb the engine "noise?" The lazerette lid also needs a new gasket. What is the durability of the self-adhesive insulation gaskets hold upfrom home improvement centers?

Insulation

WM has some good insulation...like lots of their stuff, it's expensive, but works.

Pink Panels might not work very well

Sound insulation in boats is a fairly complex subject...If you will go to www.soundown.com and read on that site, you will find out a lot of information that will make you realize you will get some, but not much help from the rigid foam panels...also, I would worry about flame retardant characteristics of some types of plastic foam panels.. basically, good sound insulation comes from having an engineered composite material (to absorb the sound waves and convert them to motion (heat) to absorb the sound) and sealing as many holes and ways for the sound waves to get out of the engine enclosure. This gets tricky as you still have to let air get into and out of the engine compartment...baffles usually do this, but again, it is not a totally simple subject. go to the soundown website and read the soundown 101 material and you will have a better idea of how to accomplish what you are trying to do.

Rigid foam is a great noise transmitter. Hold a

foam coffee cup over your ear and scratch the bottom of the cup. You need open cell foam with some mass to absorb the sound energy.

Yep, don't confuse thermal insulation with

sound insulation. Two different animals. Sound is tough to stop. Hit the books. It can be done but it's difficult. Example of the physics involved; 'A door, 90% closed will allow 90% of the sound present, to pass. Like I said, sound is tough to stop.

Your insurance firm would probably have a fit.

Stay away from foam in an engine compartment. Next time you go to a boat show there are a some commerical products that they sell exactly for what you want to do. Vic "Seven"

Rick,

I've been doing the same research for my centercockpit engine room cause its right below the cockpit and in between 2 sleeping areas and like others have said you need the right stuff, here's a couple of links

Not cheap but effective

The commercial sound insulation is not cheap but it seems to work very well. I bought a sheet last winter and just did the inside of the motor cover. It made a very significant difference in the noise down below. This winter I want to do some more. Mainly the area around the galley sink. If you do not want to spend the money for all the foam to do the entire engine comartment you can still quiet things down a lot with just a little material, Steve.

tiles or sound-down

I re-did the engine compartment with Sound Down last year. Really helped a lot-- super stuff, just hard to work with. They make self adhesive sound tiles for boats... use those. Link is below... B

Sound Proofing

I would check out www.sailorssolutions.com. They offer what is possibly the best sound proofing tiles on the market. I purchased a box of tiles to replace the insulating materials that were on my 380. Phenomenal stuff. Easy to work with. Ken S/V Little Nesi San Carlos, MX

Air

Don't forget that although the soundproofing you do isn't designed for insulation, you will retain more heat inside your engine box. That may cause overheating. Also, if you close off the air leaks to control the sound, you could be choking off the air flow to the engine. You may need to improve airflow into the engine space.
