I have a pair of Sony XS-MP1620W 6.5" marine speakers in the cockpit, and both have failed in the same way at the same time - they are less than 2 years old. Electrically they are fine, but the rubber cone support around the outside of the woofer cone on both of them has split/torn all the way around and is flapping, causing huge distortion in the bass.

I haven't over-driven them, and they are sheltered from the weather. Unfortunately I can't find another 6.5" speaker that will fit in the space, so I'll have to replace them with new Sonys. These aren't cheap speakers - $129 at West...

Has any body else had a similar problem? I don't understand why both should fail the same way at the same time  Out of warranty of course...

YES, we had a similar problem and it had a pretty good ending!

First, I am not near our boat so I can not give you model numbers or sizes etc. but here is our story.

We replaced the speakers when we purchased our boat. We got Sony and they were great. For a while..... about a year and a half or so later we had the distortion that you describe and thought, well, we have to go get new ones again..... We just assumed that maybe marine speakers just don't last very long. We were at West Marine looking at what was available to replace the bad ones and it turned out the fellow standing next to us was the Sony Rep!! He listened to us talking and interupted to tell us that this should not have happened and that we would not only get the replacements (turned out to be an upgrade because they did not have the same model ) as well as a $50 gift card for anything we wanted at a Sony Store. We got our speakers right then, for no charge, and got the gift card in the mail the next week. Those speakers have been installed and working wonderfully for over 2 years now.

So, start with West Marine, then go to Sony if you need to..... Good luck.
