• Sailing is all about the Weather.

Big into the exploration of Atlantic Hurricanes since Katrina came uninvited into his world, James (Jim) Gurley (JamesG161) has followed every Tropical Storm birthed in Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean waters since. Being a boater, he knows that we often need more time to prepare than we get from the TV weather folk. Jim relies on the science of storm development to share early warning info with friends and fellow boaters.

Early in 2018, Jim and John Shepard, (JSSailem) started to chat about the weather data available. John asked Jim to help forecast Pacific NW storms, and this morphed into discussions on weather forecasting.

For John, sailing in the PNW is sometimes hit and miss. One day is ugly, then a string of beautiful days but no wind, followed by a series of blue-sky days and 12 knot breezes. Being ready for those great sailing days means you need to look to the Pacific Ocean and what is brewing. John has been into Pacific NW Weather since the 1970’s when his first PNW November storm hit bringing more than 40 days and 40 nights of continual rain.

Together we want to share information, new APPs, safety, and thoughts about letting the weather help you. Identify some of the resources for sailors and help prepare you for your next sailboat outing.

It is far better to go out on the water knowing what to expect in weather terms, than to be out on the water and see dark ominous clouds suddenly appear, unprepared.

Something Wicked this way comes..

In sailors' terms, it might be prudent to
"batten down the hatches".

Get some comfort food and stoke the fires.

Where I am at, the drivers have trouble with driving in the sunshine. So I'm staying put and just watching the news to see how many idiots wrecked their cars.

That being said, I have driven on iced over roads and it's no fun at all. Watched a guy lock up all 4 tires and slide through the "T" intersection in front of me and banged the curb when he got sideways.

I'd much prefer plain old snow to ice. I'm hoping the snow line goes further South and spares those states the damage of ice.

It's a little nippy down here in Guanajuato, Mexico, too. Many of the residences are wearing quilted Winter jackets. I have to put on a sweatshirt.

From Google's AI Overview: "The state is experiencing cool January weather with temperatures around 10°C. In nearby León. Major ongoing events include the Feria de León (Jan 9–Feb 4) and preparations for regional carnivals."

Here in Guanajuato, they celebrate their own version of Romeo & Juliet in El Callejon del Beso. The story of the Alley of the Kiss is about Ana and Carlos. Their love forbidden by Ana's rich Spanish father, because Ana was suppose to marry wealth. Her father killed Ana when he caught the two secret lovers kissing across two facing and nearly touching balconies.

I don't know why these tourist groups, and troubadours seem to choose the alley right outside our Airbnb to congregate, but this is not El Callejon del Beso.

The hillside city is a maze of alleys, stairs, and underground streets and shops. It looks very Italian, but the alleys remind me of the town around Mamaris Castle in Mediterranean Turkey.

By the way, Feria de León is a massive state fair, the biggest in Mexico. I never saw more than the crafters' & venders' pavilion, and the street food court. I'll have to come back next year to see the agriculture displays.

Interesting picture. Why is there razor wire on the to of the iron railing in the left of the picture? Seems a little odd for what appears to be a residential area and not a prison

Don't know, but it is common. Razor wire, broken bottles line the tops of walls, I assumed it was four the pigeons, but there are a lot of places for pigeons to sit with no razor wire, and they are not covered in pigeon :poop:. So, I don't know. Crime doesn't seem to be a big problem here. Too many people around all the time.
