Something that I didn't know about changing water pump impellor when I bought m Vega in 2005

Changing impellor is straightforward, I did it today in 10 minutes. And as I replaced the original pump cover with the tiny screws and paper gasket by the easily removed and replaced cover with slots and large knurled bolt heads.

Today, as usual, the impellor once secured to the drive shaft slid easily back into the pump chamber.
But as usual, the last millimetre or two wouldn't go back in.

Happily I remembered that the trick is to manually rotate the fly wheel a little and then the shaft and impellor slide in all the way.

Does everyone just know this? Do diesel mechanics tell their children the secret when they reach 16? Or is it so obvious that it doesn't need to be said? :)

I didn't see it in the Volvo MD6 booklet?

I remember trying the flywheel trick in desperation after an embarrassingly long time spent trying to push the **** shaft back in.

At least I didn't try hammering it! :)

All the best to all,

Yes it is kind of true that mechanics do just know this. IF a shaft
has a slot in it or a tang sticking out the end of. It says rotate
me until I drop into place. It's common sense if you are a
mechanical type. If you are not then your common sense is of
another kind. I have friends who are computer programs and sometimes
one of them tells me how user friendly a program is. Yeah right I
think. Doug

Penny has just dropped. I could just have rotated the shaft (with impellor in place) with a long nose pliers..

Doug if you want some math help. . :)

Joh I am an old Machinist my business partner and I used to call his
mother when we had a math problem that was over our heads. She was a
mathematician for NASA up until the early 1960's. You may hear from
me
