Hello! I could be the proud owner of my first ever sail boat! Trustworthy source wants to share good fortune and give to me a 22'er that was given to him. Going to see it tomorrow. Any thoughts?

Very Fortunate

A classic Beauty! My Mac25 was several years in the making. That is, it took me that long to actually find a deal that I could afford. It took, me getting a steady job and an understanding wife before it all came together. Good luck sailor! Tom

Ive said it 50 times.....

"If you are at the right place and at the right time, someone will give you a sail boat"... :) :) :) I did have a free offer in Wilmington, NC, but the boat had a bent mask... and I knew ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about sail boats back then.. Im still very much a learner... but ive been to a 6 night class and sailed my 18' day sailer 3 or 4 successful times.. now know 1000% more than I did.. :) :) I figure I know 10-20% now of what i need to know to be comfortable with a boat. The class was taught with Sunfishes.... I had a chance to buy a sunfish in wilminton for $100 at a yard sale..... there was a little something wrong with it.. but at that time I did not have any idea what he was talking about. :( :( CONGRATS on the FREE SAIL BOAT... Sounds Great!

joruth, the 22 is a fun boat to sail. Very forgiving. Be sure to check it out before you take it out. Rudders, Keel, Rigging, Motor, Sails, etc. Assuming you have a trailer, try hoisting the mast and the sails while on the trailer. This will let you know if there is a problem and get you familiar with the basic parts. Start the engine but don't run it very long out of water. Enjoy! BTW, secure the bow to hold it down if you are entering from the stern. These sometimes like to rear up. Might want to hitch up the trailer to the car.

about the engine....

when you crank it, MAKE SURE water is coming out of the water discharge holes... Engines that set up a year or two or three will normally have a bad water pump impeller. its a cheap, easy do it your self $20.oo fix. VS burning the engine up. #2 check the oil in the bottom unit. make sure its full and its not milky looking...milky looking oil indicates the seals are bad. have the seals replaced. cobraearl
