After complaints from sailors about the lack of a steering lock on the 4/6/9.8 tohatsu did make a steering lock plate for those models, but it was semi-permanent. I need to steer in the harbor and lock in the lake. I saw a clever custom lock that bolted to the engine tilt bolt and sat under the front hadle. That design was perfect but took a fair amount of craftsmanship. Here is my simple solution made from a threaded rod and a turnbuckle. It slips into holes already in the motor handle. Not tested on the water yet but it should work.

There's actually a similar solutions using a shock cord and a cable attached to your rudder that allows you to tie your motor steering to your rudder.

Caguy, would you happen to have a photo of the linkage from rudder to motor you could share. I have a 2008 Hunter 25 with a 9.8 Tuhatsu I want to connect. Thanks in advance.

I have seen several systems, most using a rigid linkage between OB and rudder. I would think a rigid linkage would work better than the bungee cable system illustrated.

Google will help you find...

I haven't looked into since I decided that it wouldn't work well for my 2hp Suzuki to Harpoon rudder, but I might start looking again to connect up the 5hp Tohatsu to the 192 rudder...

Yay, more projects!
