Has anyone had experience with any of the rigid vangs. I would like to do away with the “topping lift” line for the boom to clear area for rain cover. Thanks in advance.

Garhauer Marine!

I put a Garhauer solid vang on my 26 this winter. Highly recommend it. Excellent construction at a great price. Check them out at www.garhauermarine.com They're an OEM supplier for Catalina and other boat builders.

Ditto Garhauer

I installed the Garhauer vang last season and think it's great. Installation was mostly straightforward and easy. BTW, Practical Sailor just did a review of rigid vangs about a month ago. They rated Garhauer good for construction but dinged them on the weight. If you want to race you may want to consider one of the lighter/more expensive vangs. For me, the weight (probably about 30 lbs) is not a problem and the price was great. Good luck, Jim Covey s/v Wampeter

Typo...

Sorry, I typo'd the weight in my earlier post. Should have said about 20 lbs. Jim

Thanks for input

Thank you for the input. I’ll check it out. And 20 pounds will not hurt this cruiser, I’ve got that much weight in reading material.

Boomkicker..

I installed a Boomkicker on our H260 this past weekend. It worked great and was very easy to install. I also upgraded our vang to 8:1 purchase and lead the control line aft to the cockpit. I rate vang/boomkicker as our second best improvement to the boat (behind pedestal mounted engine controls). Raising and lowering the main is now a simple task from the cockpit, and the added vang control and power is very helpfull to flatten (depower) the main when reaching. The boomkicker weighs less than 10 lbs I guess, and is a high quality piece of hardware. Looks pretty cool too...I looked at the Garhauer but couldn't get past that 30 lbs of weight. (I have racer tendencies!!) My next project is to lead all of the sail control lines aft to the cockpit. Good luck and check out the boomkicker (boomkicker.com I think..) Solid Boom Vang

The solid boom vang is great. Anything to get rid of the topping lift with the high roach main sail. Installed a Hood Solid Boom Vang a couple of years ago. It definately made sailing more pleasurable.
