Solid Teak or Teak Veneer?

From the US Sailboat show in Annapolis this weekend, a Catalina owner commented that the 309 @ the show was outfitted with bulkheads, cabinetry and head door that was teak veneered. I knew about the bulkheads being teak veneer but thought the cabinetry & door was solid teak.

Has Catalina changed their production specs or has the 309 always been finished this way?

Most are veneer

From what I saw (note I did not look for these on the Catalinas) most of the wood work on almost every boat was teak veneer. Sign of the times.

Re: Most are veneer

I noticed on the new C355 that the horizontal tops of the furniture (lockers, etc.) looked like woodgrain Formica, though I suspect they were also veneer. My 309, which is an early one, has solid teak doors and cabinetry corners, fiddles, and other trim but the larger areas are veneer.

Don't the 309's have fake teak and holly flooring?

Not that the 310's floor fakery is all that much better.

I did see the NuTeak display at the show and that stuff was pretty impressive for plastic.

All new Catalinas use the artificial flooring. I've really come to like it - easy to clean and much more durable than the real thing.

We took one of the 3'x3' sample panels out into the sunlight to get a better idea of how it looks. Frankly it's not bad. We're thinking of putting it in our Catalina 30. It would be easier to clean than the carpet.
