Solenoid

Well, i’ve had some starting issues with a Westerbeke 10-two. PO used starter fluid so i knew i had a challenge ahead of me - i changed glow-plugs and still nothing. I bridged the solenoid and it cranked right up. I had a solenoid and glowplug button on back order but got tired of waiting for them from Westerbeke, so i bought a similar solenoid from an auto parts store and installed - it didn’t work. Still requires bridging solenoid.

I realize i could have wired it incorrectly but I followed the exact wire placement as old solenoid. I suppose it’s possible that the original was wired incorrectly - how would I be able to tell if it’s wired correctly? A continuity test wouldn’t seem like it would reveal much? Also, if it is wired correctly, what am I missing? Loose wire somewhere; bad wires; wrong solenoid?

Full disclosure, i had a riding mower with the same issue when i bought it used. Changed it out and nothing. Used it for years by bridging the solenoid. Took it in to service one day and when i got it back, they had repaired the problem - they didn’t note it on bill or make any reference to it so it must have been an easy and cheap fix.

Not familiar with a Westerbeke 10-two. What does the solenoid relay supply ?

Remove all wires from the secondary terminals. Place the continuity tester across the secondary terminals of the relay and you should see an open circuit. Supply power to the coil and the tester should now show continuity.

thanks - i believe it’s for the preheat and starter? Pic is of the older solenoid

NEVER use starting fluid with glow plugs I seen a logger blow his hands right off starting a John Deere logging skidder...and that was a 4 lunger
oh, i agree. At best it doesn’t have any lubrication - at worst, boom.

That appears to be an aftermarket solenoid. They are most likely installed by a PO for the glow plugs. I doubt it would be for the starter circuit.

This wiring diagram might help, too. just scroll down

Glow Plug Solenoid or Relay Installation for faster starting

All the best, stick with it.

Thanks, I believe you’re correct and the relay is just a pre-heater solenoid. Thanks for the link, as well! I wonder if it’s the glow-plug button in cockpit that is bad, or wiring from cockpit...and that’s why i can bridge the solenoid to start. I held a piece of wire to it for 20 seconds and quickly went to ignition and it starts immediately.
