It spring in Nova Scotia, Canada and I think I may have to replace the solenoid. The engine starts with the hand crank and but only occassionally with the starter. Sometimes tapping on the solenoid helps the starter engage. The engine is an SB8 circa 1978. Should I replace all three parts and if so does Yanmar sell them or do I need to seek out an after market product. Any input is appreciated. Thanks Steve

Simple fix Steve.

Almost everyone has this problem eventually. One additional solenoid, what I call a "relay", will fix it. Before I installed the relay I had replaced everything: wiring, key switch, battery, and pushbutton. I took out the starter and had it and the solenoid reworked. The problem remains that the wiring in the boat is undersized for the task at hand. There are too many connections and small wires between the 12 volt source and the solenoid. "The fix"(Related Link) eliminates all of that. Part number 289407, page 601, in the West Marine catalog is one example.
