Thinking ahead for a few winter projects, one of which should help with getting the heat out of the cabin, I wish to install a solar vent. I was thinking of installing it in the hatch so as not to have to cut into the topside. This way if I make the big mistake it can be replaced. I was also thinking to place some kicker guards either side of the hatch to avoid anyone standing on it? Any thoughts.

I replaced our dorades with solar mini-vents. See pic.

Did It

I have installed solar vents on 2 different boats and never needed to add anything else, just listen to install directions and follow what they say so no mistakes and go slow and I did use a hole saw very slowly with portable drill and again go slow drilling not too much heat and use masking tape to protect hatch window while working and did need to grind the hole a little for 4'' fit and again go slow and double check everything and you will be fine and they work great.
