I am looking for input from other 456 owners regarding solar power. Specifically I am looking for ideas on panel types and amp size and physical size.. I would also like to get some pictures on where you placed the panels on your boat.

PS... I have 3x4D AGM batteries I need to charge and we use approx. 120/150 AH per day while we are on the hook. Our 8KW genset does the job but it is unreliable.

I have a Solar Stik that I am VERY happy with. Yes, it was expensive. But it is very effective because you can move the panels to face the sun by rotating and tilting. They have a good web site. You can email with any questions at kkindrick@juno.com. Ken

We have a stainless arch on the stern, we originally had two 135 watt kyrocia panels coupled to a blue sky charge controller, we use about 220 ah a day, and we were running the gen set 5 hrs a day. We switched out to two 250 watt kyrocia panels this last fall and upgraded to a bigger blu sky charger rated to 35 amps. Also upgraded to 6 gauge wire. Now we only have to run the gen set a hr in the morning on sunny days! We have a 2002 passage 456. Two 26 inc TVs microwave, spectra Catalina 300 water maker, etc etc. I would suggest at least 500 watts of solar and use the heaviest gauge wire possible and place the charge controller in the port settee because it's close to the batteries, also use the big monster fuses not a inline automotive type.

I mounted 2 -195 watt panels off my arch on my H-36 with round stainless tubes running back to my Bimini support and 2 aluminum angle iron to support the 2 panels across the stainless tubing and will look for photo's.
I also ran the heavy I think # 4 or 6 wire down the stainless arch where the wires come out from speakers and light and used a Blue Sky 3024i controller and remote battery monitor.
I went as larger of panels I could go with 12volt panels and picked them up from Sun electric in Miami and they very helpful and many panels to choose from which depending on different times when they have in stock.
I am out cruising but will look for my Photo's.
My panel are installed very strong and we always have our Bimini here in Fl
and the panels are over the bimini with space to look in my window in bimini for looking at my main sail.

Discovery,
Would it be possible for you to post photos of your arch install as well as your cockpit enclosure? It appears that you have a full cockpit enclosure which is something that I am looking into. Also it looks like you have twin head sails on rollers? Something I am interested as well? Was your arch custom made?

Discovery,
I also like your setup. Can you also send me some pics at kingpro9@me.com. How far have you taken your 456 ? We are 18 months into ours and we absolutely love this boat. Last spring we spent a couple of months in the Bahamas. Now we chillin' in Marathon.
