Solar panels

Hi, I have a '80 Cat 30, and am thinking of installing a 50 Watt solar panel to charge two group 24 type batteries. The question is, will I need to have a charge regulator, or can I connect directly. I'm thinking of connecting the unit on a very clear and sunny day, then being there to see the effect on the batteries. I'm open for ideas and suggestions. Thanks, Harry

Rule of Thumb

The general rule is that panels that produce less than 1% to 2% of the battery banks capacity in amp-hours do not require regulation. If you have 200 amp-hours of battery, a 4-amp panel should be OK. I would still consider a regulator with a blocking diode (prevents charge loss through solar panel) in case you add another panel someday. Hope this helps. Jeff s/v Suzanne
