Solar Panel vs Battery Charger

My 4yr old battery charger just died. Guest said it is not feasible to pay to have it fixed. It was only used when I was on the boat mainly on the weekends at the dock when I was not sailing. It blew when I was on the boat on a clear day so no storm was the cause. It blows the AC fuse immediately when turned on. So much for that one. The question is, does anyone have experience with a solar panel replacing a battery charger? It seems like it would be safer and better but I have no experience in this area. I want to replace the dead charger with another charger or a solar panel. Please let me know your experience. Thanks.

My 2 cents

The new Hunter's have battery chargers and solar panels. The guest chargers in my opinion are cheap throw aways. They break often, I've had three and all broke, and had to be replaced. One (on my 380) was shipped with the wrong fuse in it, and wouldn't work till the guy installing the radar picked up on it and switched fuses, since then it ok. The solar panel keeps a trickle charge in the batteries, but not much more, a week of cloudy days and your dead in the water ( sorry had to say it.:) I'd like to replace the guest charger with an inverter and second 4D or golf cart batteries, thereby getting a high tech charger/inverter in one, more amp hours, while still having the solar panel for backup. Good Luck Bob Knott H380
