Solar for battery charging

Hello everyone! It seems the alternator on my 5411 needs to be replaced. Rather than spend the money for that I have been thinking of installing a solar battery charging system that will keep the 2 batteries up for engine starting and basic lighting/pump needs when on our occasional 2 or three night cruises away from the marina. Has anyone done this same thing? Thanks! Chris

Chris; solar panels are at best an auxiliary charging source. Your best primary source is still your alternator. You can probably have your old one rebuilt for less than $150, a wise expenditure. Larry W.
