I just hauled out my 1990 hunter 30 and noticed a rather large soft spot in the hull located under the head on the port side ofthe boat. Has any one had this problem? Also, does anyone know how the hull is built(balsa core or foam core) and thickness(1/2", 5/8")?

There is no coring in the hull, just the deck and cabin. Hulls can be very thin in spots due to poor workmanship. Try putting a strong light outside the hull at the soft spot and see if you have a thin spot.
The hulls are thin at the "cheeks" of the bow, try the light test in the vee berth for comparison. 300 w bulb.

If it is a concern, internal reinforcement can be installed to stiffen the area.

If the spot "oilcans" then it probably has been that way since it was built. If ya move the support stand a little forward or aft to a bulkhead, the hull will be better supported on the hard.
