SoCal - sailing dinghy recommendations?

Hello everyone,

I did a bit of searching around in the forums here - quite a lot actually - as well as on Google, and elsewhere (such as local Craigslist, and sailboatlistings.com for the state of California).

I am, and have been, passively shopping for a sailing dinghy. Ideally I'd love to get something like a Lido 14, but I doubt that I'd have enough room to cram it into our slip alongside our 25' Montego sloop. Certainly there is room in there near the bow (I slip her bow-first) for a smaller boat like an Optimist, or even something like a Walker Bay 8. Not so sure about a 14' boat!

In a nutshell - sometimes I would like to pop on down to the marina (we live close by) and there are times when I feel like sailing, but not rigging the boat, nor de-rigging and cleaning it up afterwards. Sometimes it's an effort/motivation thing, but generally it's a time thing (as in, I don't have enough of it!).

I'd like something that would hold myself (I am average size, weight and shape), possibly one other person but that would be a bonus, and I would go for a single-seater if it fits the bill otherwise. I'd rather not get something like a Lazer or really, anything that requires a wetsuit (though I understand that any small sailing dinghy is prone to capsizing if you aren't studious about handling it ...) and a hiking harness. I'm not really looking to do that type of high-performance dinghy racing or whatever. That said, I might prefer something slightly more capable upwind than a Sabot (of which there are many used ones for sale). I'd prefer a daggerboard or centerboard to lee boards.

Ideally I'd keep it rigged (stepped, that is) in the water, ready to go, alongside QUANTA. And ideally, I'd like to keep this as affordable as possible; that means used, and probably something cat rigged though I would love something with a jib (ideally! :D).

So I have two questions, essentially:

1. what kind of boats would you guys recommend that I check out?

2. what other places to look, or tactics to search, would you recommend? for example I was considering posting a "want to buy" kind of post on Craigslist, and/or posting a similar thing on our bulletin boards down at the marina.

If all else fails, I am sort of considering a new Walker Bay 8 with the "performance sail kit" but at $2100 on sale, and excluding tax and shipping, that is about twice as much as I was hoping to spend.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I only mentioned SoCal because I know that availability of these things tend to be localized ... and I am not willing to go out of state or pay for delivery.

I am sure this is not what you want to hear, but if you adventursome enough, you might want to build your own. H.H.Payson has some really nice Instant Boat that are sailing dinghy. Take a look at their website. I have always wanted to build one, and really still do want to build one.

Anyway, though I would throw that out on the table.

Hey Brian! Man, I love your suggestion and it is definitely my goal to build a wooden sailing pram or dinghy one day!

To be clear - and I expect full support and admiration regarding this comment:

1. I do not own a home, and so have NO GARAGE or workshop where I can undertake such a project. But I do own a 25' sailboat, a tandem kayak, and a Porta-Bote. :D The latter two reside on our small patio, and have to go in and out through the living room and out the front door! All I am saying is that I have my priorities straight and I expect concurrence from this group!

2. I am utterly lacking in woodworking skills. But, one day I will jump in and overcome this deficiency in order to build, probably, a Bolger-designed sailing dinghy. Seriously, this is one of my life goals.

jssailem, I very much like the ElToro and haven't heard of them before. Thank you, I will include this in my search!

PS - love the fact that with the ElToro, and the Walker Bay 8, that I could use it as a rowing or outboard-powered dinghy when sailing to Catalina, etc. That is a clear "pro" in favor of these options.

Hey RussC - I have in fact heard of the Snarks and saw this website here that sells them.

For about $1,500 shipped (not including sales tax, I think), I could get a new one.

The things I like about them - I could get a brand new one, I could easily pick it up and car-top it elsewhere by myself. They seem pretty easy and simple. The main thing I don't like is how narrow it is, and how the guys in the demo videos all seem to be hanging their legs out the side of the thing (though that guy looks taller than my 5'9") ... I would think that would become uncomfortable fairly quickly (realizing, of course, that sitting cross-legged in an Optimist is probably not a whole lot better). The other thing I'd worry about is durability, being basically a styrofoam boat, and whether it would eventually get too beat up sitting in the water. Then again it would be easy enough to store it on the foredeck if that proved to be the case.

Thanks Russ.

Please keep the suggestions and comments coming!

The original Snarks were just solid styrofoam but the newer ones are coated with a vinyl skin and are actually very durable. I used to drag mine around across rock "beaches" all the time with no ill effects. ;) I wish I hadn't sold mine in fact. paid $400.00 for it at the time ;) .

Brian... Are you ok? "May your seas be calm and the wind always on your starboard beam!"

Here you go. An excellent little sailboat to play with. Can double as a rowable or small motor dingy to get you to shore.

It is an ElToro.

John - El Toro's have a nasty habit of imitating a submarine. The absolute coldest I've ever been is while racing an El Toro in Port Angeles bay - I submarined.... I was in the water about 10 minutes before a passerby came and rescued me (the real rescue boat wasn't even out yet) -- Took me hours to warm up. what ever he get should self right, once an El Toro is down it is out for the count. I did get the dunken-hinze trophy tho.

Les... LOL ;>)
I taught sailing to crew members off work in NAS Alameda (Special Services, located at end of pier for the carriers) back in the late 60's. ElToro's were the boat available. We had about 10 of them. You never went on one with out a life jacket. And you never let you weight get near the mast. I've seen them take a dive, right at the dock, while an unknowing sailor was bragging to his buddies about his sailing skills. We added flotation under the bow and seat so when they did go over or under they would stay afloat. The seat is misnamed. I was always on my knees in the boat.

Oh I had all my weight in the stern, all 178 lbsof it. Going down wind if the wind has a vertical component it goes down.

I believe the plans called it a thwart not a seat

Look for a good used Montgomery 10 or a Montgomery 12 built by Jerry Montgomery by his company Montgomery Marine. The boats are no longer produced but many were built and Jerry's shop was in SoCal so that is where most of them reside. Both both boats are excellent sailing to windward and, if you are so inclined, will plane off the wind.

Anyone ever hear of a Sea Swan 8'3" sailing dinghy built by Criterion Co in Swansea, MA in the mid 1970s to 1987? Has mast fwd w/o boom, retractable centerboard made of aluminum; can sail, row, or use outboard. Likely near 450# max. load capacity. Might be the ticket? I know where you might be able to get one near San Pedro for a few hundred $$$$.

There's also the Bauer 8 if you decided you wished to revise your criteria, go out of state, and spend some (more) $$$ on newer models.

I've heard that the sailing kit for the Porta-Bote is less than great and that it sails like crap. Honestly we are probably going to sell it soon. I may keep the 6 HP Nissan outboard however.

I'd have to see the Sea Swan - boomless?
