So I am cleaning out the aft port hold...

and I find a really nasty crack at the joint of the aft dinette seat and the inside floor of the hold. While I am down there I then notice another small crack on the outside of the hold where the dinette floor rounds up to the wall/front of the seat. These look suspiciously related. I then quickly exited the boat (I have it in my back yard currently) and inspect the underside. I see no damage what so ever. So I then assume the Cat 22 is double hulled. My question is this. How do I repair this nasty crack? Then while I have my head in the hold inspecting the crack I notice what looks like a bulge in the keel trunk back by the battery tray, but almost below the electrical panal. I need to get a mirror and inspect it more closely, but it looks like daylight reflected off my finger. Yet this hole/bulge almost appears to be made that way as there are no jagged edges and it appears to be formed as opposed to having pulled away or punctured from the outside as there are no cracks around it. I also see there are cracks around my keel lock down bolt and a rust trail running down into the hold as if it leaks some. As you can tell, yesterday was spent looking much like an osterich with its head in the sand. I finally had to call it quits when all the blood ran to my head and I got dizzy! :) Any adviced or suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks! Robbin

my c22 looks the same way

i have the same bulge you do it just the keel trunk it runs the lenght of the boat in to the bilge as far as the crack in the cabin liner if it is not flexing and there are no crackes on the out side i would leave it alone the rust on the locking bolt mine was leaking badly so i used a drummal tool ground out and around the bolt then filled it with 4200 no moor leak the boat is dry have fun with yours i know how you feel with your head upside down in the lockers!!!!

I should have been more specific

The bulge/hole in the keel trunk is only about one inch in vertical (up and down) length. The opening of the bulge is less than 1/2 inch wide at its widest point. And the bulge/hole opening is facing forward, exiting aft. Like I say, I need to get a mirror and check if it is indeed a hole, but right now it surely does look like it!

So I'm cleaning...

As far as the crack in the dinette is concerned, don't fret this is common among 22's. The walk through is suspended to allow for the keel trunk. During some early orders the engineers allowed for additional foam to be added for floatation, I know this from a friend of mine who added the foam. You can fillet the crack with 4200, however it may return when you walk below. I had considered going to Home Depot and getting a few cans of insulating foam to flood the lower compartment with, I did this on an old McGregor boat I had. The draw back is the foam goes where it wants.

Insulating foam

Jamie, I guess the foam would have to go in behind the bulkhead under the dinette floor. There are openings on each side of the dinette floor high up inside each seat locker. I assume this would be where you would inject the foam. It does seem to me that if the floor had additional support it would not sag and crack under adult weight. It also appears as though the foam would be confined inside this area. Would it expand to the point of pressing the dinette floor upward and out of shape? Thanks, Robbin
