I recently purchased an O'Day 222 and the centerboard snapped cleanly off, leaving me with the upper 1/3 fastened underwater and the lower 2/3 and pendant in my garage. I see D+R has a replacement. I can't find any other closer or less expensive source. Can I pin and/or glue the snapped centerboard back together, or do I need to find a replacement? Are there sources other than D+R (new or used?). How is the centerboard removed and re-installed?
Thanks

Fred,
If you have both pieces of the centerboard, you can probably build a new centerboard using the old one as a pattern. A friend of mine in my yacht club built a new rudder blade from scratch for an O'Day 27 that he owned. I don't see why you can't build a centerboard. He used foam, fiberglass epoxy, and a special sewn fiberglass cloth. The final set up involved the epoxy and micro balloon filler. As for removing the centerboard; You need to remove the two stainless steel plates which are bolted under the keel. The plates hold the two triangular wedges which fit in slots in the keel. The fiber pivot pin is held in place by these two wedges. You need to shore up your boat with timber in order to get at the bottom of the keel to work on it. Check through the archives on this site and you will find my postings along with a lot of pics and instructions on how to do it. A fellow named Baysailor Bill in Providence RI built a centerboard for his 1973 O'Day 23 about two years ago, and he too had posted some info on his progress. I don't really believe that you can fix a broken centerboard, but I may be wrong about that. Good luck with that.

Fred,
Here's a sketch of my O'Day 222 Centerboard if that will help you.
