I recently became owner of Catalina 42 mk11 and have noticed a distinct snap crackle pop sound coming from the keel or hull while at dock. Seems more noticeable at night but maybe because things are quieter then. Sounds like a fresh bowl of rice crispies only louder. I am baffled.

Are there critters eating sea stuff off your hull? I'm not kidding. Sleep tight, Jack

Shrimp

Experienced the same thing on a steel boat I was on in San Diego last month. Turns out it was shrimp in the water. Faint, but very definite "crackle crackle", audible in the V-berth or aft cabin at night. Didn't notice it in the day, don't know if it was because it wasn't there, or because ambinet noise was greater.

Or it is just settleing in after the heat of the day. My house does it in the morning as the sun heats up. I doubt that we have shirmp in the Annapolis area. But we could.

Okay, I'll admit I'm not 100% on the shrimp

thing but I was sure baffled by the noise & couldn't answer the admiral and others when asked about it, so when a dockmate suggested the "singin" shrimp thing I grabbed it with both hands. Even if not true it's a great story ain't it ? and as plausible as anything else I could think of. It was loudest after the boat was hauled 3 years ago so there might be something to the "settleing" in theory. Haven't heard it for a while but the boat is getting hauled and painted again this month so I'll see if the noise returns in the middle of winter.

dirty bottom

It is probally stuff growing on your bottom or the dock. If you have ever swam near a reef it makes the same noise. It also seems when you are trying to sleep every noise is louder.

I hear the same crackling under my boat or under my dock. I feel it is the oysters openning and closing their mouths on their shells, filtering the water for food.
