Dear Gordon, I have a very smokey MD22L, but I think, unlike George, I may have a problem. When I bought the boat last January, it smoked a bit at start-up and everyone said this was normal. It always started up right away and ran smoothly. However, in the last month or so, it is getting difficult to start (like one or two cylinders isn't firing) and billows smoke like crazy for several minutes. If I start it the next day, the same thing occurs. Something definately has changed! The fuel is fresh and I haven't done anything different since January. It's a '96 with approx. 500 hours.
