No need for holes if you mount it with Velcro outdoor heavy duty 4 x 1 inch strips that hold 15 lbs. That is what I use for new CO and smoke alarms to avoid ceiling and bulkhead screws. I would take a piece of 3/8" starboard slightly larger than your new device and drill holes to match the existing holes and mount it. Then mount the new device on the starboard.
