I've got a new 42 that admitedly doesn't get used much. The water intake lines on both heads have anti-siphon valves to prevent the obvious. However, the first few pumps on the head plunger when the boat hasn't been used for a week or two sends a foul-foul odor into the cabin via the anti-siphon valve--I believe. Is this normal. This occurs eventhough there is little more than water in the holding tanks--boat is new. It clears up after a half-dozen pumps. But I'd rather avoid the stink in the first place. Ideas? At last...an EASY one! 
Your odor is caused by sea life--animal and vegetable--in seawater .that's left in the intake hose, pump, the channel in the rim of the bowl...the water stagnates, the critters die and decay...and stink. The cure can be found in the reference library in the Head Mistress forum...look for an article called something like "Toilet Intake Odors." Avoid the inline chemical devices that are supposed to cure the problem. Despite mfrs' claims to the contrary, the chemicals that kill the odor also kill the seals and any othe rubber and neoprene parts in toilets and MSDs.

Smelly Head on H450
We have a nearly new H450 (which we love). The head in the master bedroom has the same problem reported by Mike Kolbenschlag - the first pumps of the head after a period of non use result in a terrible odor. The odor goes away after the first pumping, while the head is in regular use. We do not have the same problem with the front head on the boat. Anne Castleberg Santa Barbara
