Am trying to purchase a small diesel motor to put in one of our small (18') yachts. Preferably single cylinder. Anyone know of or if such a motor exists?

Yes they exist
There are diesel motors made down to about 10 hp. I have seen some on Japanese made generators. I don't know how small of a marine diesel you are going to find.

Yanmar and others make them. Smallest outboard I've seen is by Yanmar but over 200lbs. alan

Westerbeke has a new 7 hp diesel
In Westerbeke’s Summer 2002 newsletter, there is an article about its new 7 hp single cylinder diesel they have installed in Com-Pac’s new “Horizon Cat”. The Horizon Cat is a gaff rigged 20’ sailboat and the article mentions that Com-Pac will also install it on a new sailboat they plan on coming out with. In Westerbeke’s Summer 2002 newsletter, there is an article about its new 7 hp single cylinder diesel they have installed in Com-Pac’s new “Horizon Cat”. Interesting motor Clyde. 6.4hp @ 3000 rpm and *only* 151 pounds. But it is a marine diesel. And hand crankable too.

Diesels are reialble and two have already been mentioned in the posts but I have one major question. First, inboard diesels are not cheap. Second, where would you find the room to put one in? Third, the cost of the installation? Is diesel avialable in your area and is there a good disel mechanic? For an 18 foot sailboat, I would tend to question the inboard diesel as to exspense and the room. Keep me posted on this one. Crazy Dave Condon

This little yachts is an 18 foot Princess. Built in Sydney Australia. She has a locker at the stern with a removable lid. So the dimensions are 3'6" wide (S to P)30" deep and 26' long (B to Stern). I looked at a Yanmar with sail drive and it will only just fit. The idea was great but as usual Dave you are right! The cost..........$8500.00.(Aus) Back to the drawing board!! Thanks anyway.
