Small Cockpit lockers

I have a 1992 Hunter 27 with 2 aft cockpit lockers. The openings are too small to be of much use. However, they are deep and spacious once inside. The question is how do I get access to them? Batteries are installed in the starboard locker and Head holding tank, macerator and piping / fittings in the port locker. Does anyone know of an alternate means of getting into these lockers? If there's not a way that I'm missing, Hunter has a poor design. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ken I have a 1990 with the same problem. I am considering installing access hatches in the transom to allow better access to the batteries and macerator/fuel tank. I agree it is a poor design. Jim

Head first

I find a good head first dive into these lockers work best. It is also nice to have someone on board that can pull you out by your belt. I did a header in to disconnect the battery. I ended up upside down for about five minutes unable to get back out. Why would anyone think this is a bad design!!!
