Don, Dennis Connor's book talks about velocity made good (I think thats the term, I'm at work now)anyway best speed vs. angle for wind speed. Checked the source he mentioned but found no graphs for small boats. Is there a formula or source for smaller 22' boats thanks and thanks for the forum Gary

Gary: I just happen to have Dennis's book in front of me. I was using it to answer another question. What you are asking about is target boat speed or a polar, which was discussed a while back, but not in a lot of detail. You can get the info you seek from your boat builder or US Sailing. You can also calculate your own by going to www.setsail.com Dennis goes into a lot of detail on the subject. In fact, when I started reading it just now I got hooked on what he was saying and re-read every page!! I met Dennis Conners years ago in San Diego at the Americas Cup and found him to be a nice fellow. I was sitting at a bar on Shelter Island and this guy came up to me and asked me if the seat next to me was vacant. I nearly fell on the flipping floor when I recognized him as Dennis Conners. We had a nice talk but he would not allow me to buy him a drink. I know a lot of mates don't like him, especially a lot of sailors over on the Catalina list on another network, but I usally end the discussion by asking the detractors, "if he asked you to sail with him, would you?"
