Slow drip.....

We are looking for some help,I am sure that someone could help identify some boat parts. We noticed that we have a slight drip (1 cup per 48 hrs) on the drive shaft. There is a 2" dia. hose aprox. 6" long and in front of that there is a large hard plastic bushing in fact it looks like one bushing is fastened into another with a cotter pin for alignment. The drip is right at the bushing.Is this a repair that can be done in the water or do we need to pull the boat. 1991 Hunter 30T. Thanks, Ken Y.

packing problem

Its sounds like your packing gland needs adjusted or the packing needs replaced. IF You are handy it could be done in the water but if your not handy the marina could do the job quickly.

Ken - You are definitely describing the packing gland. Check the archives and you will find many posts concerning this topic. I will send you an email on this today.

Tighten until NO drip at rest.

Ken: There should be NO drip at all when the shaft is NOT turning. There is normally a cotter key or a wire that prevents the coupling from turning. You must remove this before you start any adjustments. I suggest that you only do one increment at a time and watch for the drip to quit. If the coupling is bottomed out then you will need to replace the packing or have it done. There are several products on the market. Some of them allow the packing to be tight enough that they do not need to drip even when the shaft is turning. Others will require a slight drip 2-5 drips per minute when the shaft is turning. Check around to determine what you want. You also need to be sure to get the proper size packing for your shaft. Check out the Hunter Marine Website. They have a section under the FAQ's that will address the question. I believe that you have a one inch shaft with a nylon stuffing box.
