slow draining galley sink

After reading some of the posts in the Archives, I think I will replace my old gate valve. I noticed it's really 'long winded. I must of turned it 13 to 16 half turns and it finally closed. Well it doe's open, but still drains real slow. Looking at the way the sink drain is plumbed..through the hull and under the water line...it would seem to me that it would drain slow because the water in the line "I would think" would take a certain amount of time to meet its own level. Also, I must have a problem in the lines..gate valve..or thru hull port. Its takes about 2 minutes for a inch of water to disappear........and I wouldn't think that would be normal. Appreciate any comments or advice.

Check hose and valve

My 1980 H27 has the original valve and I have resisted replacing it. It drains quickly. An inch of water is gone in a 10-15 seconds. My boat is on a lift and the drain time on or off the lift is about the same. Best of luck.

Try "degreasing" it

Over time, grease etc can build up in a sink drain hose. Close the seoock, pour a couple of ounces of Raritan C.P. It's marketed only only as a toilet bowl cleaner...but it's the best drain and sump cleaner on the planet. It's bio-enzymatic...the enzymes "eat" grease, oil, hair, soap scum--all the stuff that buuilds up in drain hoses. But it does need time to work, so use it when it can stand in the hose at leas overnight, if not longer. If that doesn't cure the problem, check your thru-hull for any sea life that may have set up housekeeping on the outside of it and partially blocked it. 'Cuz no matter how temperamental your gate valve has become (and btw, I wholehearted second the recommendations to replace it with a ball valve), if you can get it open, that's not why your drain is slow...and replacing the valve won't solve your problem.

Valve

Replace all gate valves with ball valves. You can't tell what is happening inside a gate valve even when you think it is working. Stem corrosion is the big unseen problem.

Appreciate the feedback

After reading your comments...I will be replacing the gate valve with a 'ball valve'. And 'Peggie', I will be picking up some 'Ratitan C.P.'. Thanks again. :)

Replace that Gate valve

Other responses may work, but there are several reasons to replace that Gate valve that should have never been installed in the first place. If the hose were to fail, and the gate valve were to fail to close, you could lose your boat. I had the same problem 3 yrs ago. I replaced the gate valve and hose, and have had claer draining since. I sleep a little better at anchor also, because with a ball valve I know that it is closed!! Good luck.
