Hartley S Newman 2004 hunter 36

I bought a new Hunter 36 in 2004 and had it equipped with a PYI max prop. It did a blistering 3.8 kts under power. We hauled the boat and re-indexed the prop and I got 5.2 kts. Is this it? Does anybody out there have a hunter 36 with a max prop that gives decent speed under power? If yes, what settings are you using. I may still be messed up. thanks for the help. Any responses to newman 2848@cox.net would be appreciated. I'm on the hard for another couple of days doing the bottom. This would be a great opportunity to fix this nagging item.

Are You Getting 100% Max Rated RPM at WOT?

If not, you may need further pitch adjustment. If yes, I think I'd be checking my knot meter calibration. Good luck. Perhaps someone has better ideas. Rick D.

Go to their web site

Go to their web site and get the instalation manual that has proper setings and adjustments, than call them and tell them what kind of a boat you have and they will tel you what setings you need. I did dthat foam may boat and it worked. www.pyiinc.com

under power

you should be able to do about 7kts under power if you're properly propped. On the 356/36 hull, you hit max speed when the aft edge of the rubrail (center of the stern) submerges-after that, the drag seems to be too great for further speed. I run an autoprop and we max out at about 2800 rpm

Check your knotmeter...

against GPS over ground on a flat day without current so you can get a good comparison in both directions. You may need to recalibrate your knotmeter.

slow boat

In neutral it will turn 3600, in gear 3400, and the gps verifies it's slow. I still am leaning toward prop re-index. Skip

Gori prop

I recently put on a Gori 3 blade folding prop on my '05 H36. I easily get 7 to 7.2 indicated at 2850 to 2900 rpm's in overdrive mode. In regular mode I get the same speed at around 3200. You should be able to do the same with yours. Did they sell you the wrong size? The dealer sold me a different diameter than the stock 2 blade. I think I'd double check.

Something's Not Right

Something is definitely not right and it could be any number of things. I've had a Max Prop 2-blade for many years now and a couple days ago I was motoring along at 2700 RPM and comfortably doing 6.3 knots in light wind with our HL-35, 12,600# displacement but with a couple truck loads of 'stuff' on board. The first thing I'd check is the knotmeter - after all, you have to have correct figures to work with. If the knotmeter isn't properly calibrated everything else useing it is meaningless. And I'd assume, maybe incorrectly?, that the tach is reasonably accurate too. If you're getting soot on the transom, and you wern't before, the prop isn't pitched enough. Call PYI because they're the best source of assistance I can think of. www.pyiinc.com
