slipping winches.....

I replaced my halyards this weekend and now my winches don't seem to bite the new rope that well and are slipping. Is there something I can do to make them grip without replacing them this year? They still work well for the older sheets, so I am thinking that maybe the new line will break in or something.

What kind of line did you use? Can you add more wraps?

same with me , 1/2" sta set-x

I put a new main halyard on this year and it slips too. new england rope sta set-x I found that 3 - 4 wraps help but I cleat it off also. I hope it breaks in.

That's normal for set-x.

Just give it time and it will wear in. If you want to speed up the process, try soaking the tail in a bucket of soapy water overnight. Then let it soak in a bucket of fresh water overnight.

Coatings

Greg -Most new line has a coating on it that tends to make them slippery. When I worked at West Marine I asked the New England ropes guy why - he explained it helps the machines that reave the filaments into rope. A couple of good rains or a night in a soapy bucket willl solve the problem.Justin - O'day Owners' Web

That is good to know...I will probably have to replace my winches next year since they are 20 yrs old Gulp!

At most, they probably need a good servicing but replacing them just cuz they're 20 years old is overkill. Now if you don't like them, that's a different story!LaDonna
