Our floorboards are a plastic laminate type material and pretty old. Is there a durable spray you recommend to make them a little less slippery? At some point in the next two years we will be replacing the floorboards.

How is the sole of your boat shoes and what product are you using to clean the veneer. They are designed not to be slippery nor to be made shinny. A good degreaser and wax remover could be of help. In my case it's my worn shoe soles that cause me to slip.

When we wear boat shoes down below there is no problem. Barefoot, we slide around like a 6 year old at a wedding reception.

Welcome Trent to the SBO Forum. I can understand the frustration and danger you might feel coming down the ladder and sliding uncontrollably across the salon. Short of adding a material to cover the floor in a nonskid (destroying the beautiful image of the floor) you might give Woody Wax a try. The marketing material says it is " a Long-lasting and effective non-skid wax".

this spring and used it on my boat. It did a good job of lifting oils and grease and when it was all done and clean, the surface was not slippery.
We have a cushioned kitchen floor mat (Amazon Link) at the bottom of the companion way. It does not slip and it provides a soft landing space. It is also easy on the knees when working on the engine.
Carpet (I like rubber backed runners). IMO varnished floors on a boat are simply stupid, and I have had them on a number of boats. Too slippery. I have some at home, but not if my home swayed and got wet.
A traditional solution is to varnish them, sprinkle on coarse salt (grinder works) onto the wet varnish, and then wash the salt off. It leaves a good texture.

FWIW we have visited a high-end sailboat (about 40+ feet) with a "Treadmaster" sole topping. Looked great and had wonderful traction. Nice on sock feet and bare feet. Not a cheap solution, but really safe.
Thanks! That Atlanteak product is something we will seriously consider when it is time to replace the floorboards. Looks like the perfect solution.
