I am going to look at a set of used sails this weekend. The man said the jib has a sliding sewn in cord. I am used to the jibs with hanks that attach to the stay. Can anyone tell me what he has? Will I need to refit my boat? Which is better?

Also, does anyone have an opinion on airforce sails?

Thanks a lot

Not totally sure from the description but could be one of two things. The luff of the sail could have a luff tape that is used with roller furling systems. Instead of hanks the tape fits in a groove in the roller furling headstay extrusion. This is probably what he means.
The other possibility is a leech line that is used to stop the fluttering of the leech of the sail when it gets stretched out or isn't trimmed too good.
The leech line is a good thing to have, often is an option on sales but highly recommended. For the luff you can modify the sail to match what you need but may have to buy parts and makes the mods or have a sailmaker make them. With all the used sails out there I'd pass on one requiring modification and find one that fits your needs.

AirForce sails were/are made by Johnson Sails in Florida.... I have a set purchased 10 years ago, very good, coastal quality sail. I suggest you do some research on sail construction.... easily found through just about any sailmakers site.

If you have to convert your luff tape (that's what the guy is talking about...I'm wondering why he doesn't know the proper name for it) to hanks, it will be a fairly substantial cost... couple hundred I'll bet. You should call a local loft and ask them how much they would charge for the conversion.... you'll need know the sail's luff dimension.

Unless you're getting a terrific deal...... I"d look for a sail that doesn't need converting.

Because this sail has a luff tape, and the owner doesn't know what the real name of it is, and didn't bother to explain the difference to you.... I'll almost guarantee the sails are either stolen or in crappy condition. Or he's sell them for somone else... in which case, if you knew more you might get a great deal.

Anyway, he should have asked you whether you had a roller furling unit or not... and if so, what size tape it needed. Also, you should know enough about sails to ask him these questions before you waste your time on something that is not going to work for you right away without incurring additional costs.

There's also a good chance that this sail, because it came off an RF unit, has a sacrificial, sunbrella protection strip sewn to the foot and leech of the sail. If it doesn't, and the sail has been left rigged.... my guess it is already destroyed. And... If there is a sacrificial cloth strip on the sail......... you don't want it.. because they are useless on hanked on sails. Another thing you will have to change.... at your expense.

If it was me.... I keep looking.... until I found someone who knew what he was talking about.
