Hey everybody. I just bought a new main from Lee Sails, but the representative made an error and put the slugs (these fit in my mast and look like a capsule, like a pill) on the foot, and the slides (these look like a rectangular brick-laying tool) on the luff--which is reversed. I just want to throw this question out there, because he has a conflict of interest in advising me: Can somebody provide a brief explanation of when one would prefer a slide or slug sewn on vs. shackled on? My understanding was that you sew the slides (since they are plastic) and you shackle the slugs (since they have a wire back). But once Lee Sails offered to pay for the repairs (instead of it coming out of his pocket) he said we should sew the slugs. I just want this thing done right, all tips welcome.

With a shackle you can replace
w/o taking the sail back to the loft. I have all slides shackled on and I will be replacing a couple of the lower luff slides at the reef points for wear. Of course omitting the shackle does reduce links in the system, which is always good. So I guess it doesn't matter unless you will remote from a loft for a few weeks and need to make a good self repair. Lot of help this was.

To preclude going back to the sail loft while the season is in play, simply deploy a small velcro wristband that they sell everywhere. Does the trick for an entire season.
