After living on my Merit 22 several times 2-3 days at a time, I thought it was time to make a galley. The Merit is a racer/cruiser, without the slide-out galley of a Catalina, which very few people use.
I needed a high place to set my water jug that has a spout, a basin to catch the water, a place to wash dishes, a tough surface for hot pans, and kitchen item storage. I think I have come up with small boat galley made with today's methods and materials.
Picture 1, the birth of an idea - water jug, basin, stove, storage.
I wanted to somewhat match the teak, so I used 1/4" flooring underlayment. It is fine grained and light. Framework is cedar - light and smells good. Glue and 18 ga. nail gun lengths of 1" - 2" was used, making it quick to assemble, strong and weighing only 15#
The corners are rounded and formica bent with heat gun. Opening cut for stove storage. I don't want a door.
Non slip mat is used under the water jug, and felt under the stove legs.
I empty the basin into 1 gallon milk jugs with screw top labeled Grey Water. A funnel helps.
No water tanks of questionable cleanliness. I use see through containers.
I have enough storage under the basin to store pots and pans, cups, utensils and other kitchen items.
I can slide it part way in to keep access to the sink, or tuck it clear under to have more passenger room. The whole unit is manageable to take out to the cockpit.
Now I have a basin to wash and shave in, that is elevated enough to stand and cook with. The Merit has a pop-top or half the sliding cabin top can be removed.
