Hello,

I am looking at purchasing a 1980 Hunter 30' that looks in overall good shape. The only thing I can find of concern is that there was a major repair to the skeg where it attaches to the hull. There is a visible repair mark on the skeg port and starboard where the fiberglass was redone. The color is different and it looks kinda like a scar. There are some small cracks along the repair zone and I am wondering if it is of major concern. Has anyone else repaired this problem in the past and how does it hold up?
I dont see any evidence of compression around the mast step but I will have a surveyor look at the boat before finalizing.

Thanks in advance

John

Both the rudder skeg and the prop shaft skeg are bolted to the hull. If you remove the aft panel in the berth behind the nav station, you can inspect both attachments from inside the hull.

My poor effort at search

If you use the "Search" tab with "skeg" and "H30" you will see quite a few threads on this subject. Here is one: http://forums.hunter.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?p=500410&highlight=skeg .

Thanks Ed,

I tried a search on Skeg rudder and got no returns. I like to try to find my answer first before pestering people but didn't get anything on Google or searching in this forum so then I posted. I wonder what I did wrong?? Oh well live and learn. I appreciate your reply and will keep looking

Thanks,
John

Didn't mean to imply that you didn't try John. In fact I have complained to Phil, I don't think "Search" works very well. For example if I do a search limiting to 37.5 I get a few of those and a ton of 37-cutter and others. But I have no problem with people asking questions that have already been answered. Sometimes it is just easier for me to link to a better answer from the archives. Especially if I have no clue.

John,
You'd defiantly want to have a surveyor look at the skeg repair but you might be able to get some idea of the extent of the repair by looking inside the boat just above the skeg for recent glasswork. If done right, it should be good as new. If done poorly...:(
Regarding shaft struts, most are bolted then faired to the bottom of the hull. Over time the fairing compound starts to crack and can look a little nasty but mostly it's just cosmetic and fairly common. Obviously, if the strut is loose, heavily corroded or leaking it'll need to be taken care of.
