Sizing a Max-Prop

I've emailed 2 different suppliers for Max-Prop for their recommendations on size and pitch for my 1993 Passage. One says 2 blade 17 x 12.5, or 3 blade 17 x 11.5. The other supplier says 2 blade 18 x 16, or 3 blade 18 x 15. If any of you have repropped, what seems to be the best?

I have that setup

I have a 93 Passage 42 also, and went through quite a bit to find the right prop and combination. Get the 18", and if you want better motor speed, set the pitch to what would equate to a 16 pitch. If you want detail, email me and I'll send you my phone number to cover all of it with you. Chuck Vincent

You can ask the guys who distribute them in the US by posting the question inthe Props and Drivetrains forum. Good luck!

Hunter suggests

I am in the process of changing props also. The previous owner installed a 18x13 fixed three bladed prop. The boat with a clean bottom only goes 7.3 knots at 2800 rpm. Hunter, in their spec. sheet, suggests an 18x15 two blade prop or an 18x14 three blade. Let me know what you decide. A.B.

Maybe this will help, maybe not

After reading the posts regarding the different pitches and diameters, I must agree with Phil - Ask the experts for a size recommendation. However, for what its worth, I have a 1997 h40.5 with a 50hp Volvo. The original prop was a Martec 18x16 2-blade. I just installed this spring an AutoStream 3-blade feathering prop. This is designed in Australia and marketed in the US by Martec. I bought through pyacht.com. The recommendation was for a 18' diameter with the pitch set to 12" for this 3-blade prop. It was right on the money. At WOT I turn within 25 rpm of the speed with my old 2-blade prop. My top speed has increased by 0.4 kt from 8.1 to 8.5 kt at WOT (3000 rpm). At 2000 rpm I cruise at 6.7 kt. I don't know what engine is in the Passage 42, but I would suspect something around 65-70 hp. BTW, this AutoStream prop has EXTERNAL pitch adjustment screws and can be repitched by a diver without a haul-out. A single grease fitting lubes the prop underwater and the zinc attaches with a single nut. ALL maintenance can be done underwater without a haul-out. The pitch is individually adjustable for forward and reverse as well. All this and $1000 UNDER the MaxProp model without the external pitch adjustments. Did I mention that the construction is all stainless steel? Virtually no electrical difference between the prop and the monel steel shaft. 5 year warrantee. I've got pictures of the installation if anyone is interested. Rich

Rich, post your pictures on the Photo Forum

Rich: I think that this type of information is very helpful. Why don't you post these pictures on the Photo Forum.

As I was saying I did all of that

As the other 42 owner said, I had a fixed 18" x 13" fixed and the darn thing would only do around 6.8 to 7.0 knots and turned 3900 rpm max. When I put the max-prop on, they told me to set the pitch to 14 but no more than 15. I tryed a 15 pitch, but was still turning around 3700 rpm, so I set it to 16 and and I turn 3600 clean bottom and prop, and the max speed is 8.4.
