Size outboard

I presently have a Tostaha 5 hp the owner manual states is acually 3.9hp. Im using this on my 1993 23.5 sloop.

I am considering sailing down Arkansas River,Alton pool,Tenn -Tombigbee next fall. I have a Johnson 9.6 in good condition my brother gave me a few years ago. It runs like a top.

I am thinking this larger OB would be excedllent size for heavy weather current variations.

Question is this larger outboard to much for the transom?

I want to mount it to a swing bracket to raise and lower OB . Is this doable?

I had a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke high thrust on the back of my Catalina 22 for a short time. The C22 had a lifting motor mount rated at 100 lbs max. The Yamaha was just under that.

It was a lot of motor for that boat. I needed the thrust, so I put up with it for a couple of seasons. I was glad when my situation changed and I could go back to a motor half the weight.

Mark I would defiantly go with the larger outboard, esp where currants are concerned

The 9.6 is too much motor for your boat, but it beats being underpowered for the trip you are contemplating. I would contact Hunter Marine and confirm the transom can take the weight of your brother's motor. Better to be underpowered than lose the motor altogether....

My Hunter 23.5 has an 8 hp kicker . I just bought the boat and live in Co. but I like the power ......in a real lake or bay I would REALLY like the power .

A 5 or 6 hp would be optimum for your boat (IMHO). If you are considering a longer cruise, I would suggest you consider a motor with an exterior fuel tank. It would be a drag if you had to constantly add fuel to the motor.

Nissan 9.9... Overkill?

We went for a new 4-stroke 9.9 Nissan long shaft this season. Yes, I know it's more hp than we need, but there were several factors which we considered.

First, we got caught in a microburst 2 seasons ago & the 6hp outboard regular shaft that came with the boat cut out twice, fortunately well after the worst of it had passed. It had been serviced at the start of the season, but it was 15+ years old, so an upgrade was in order.

Second, I'd rather cruise along at 1/4 throttle than 1/2 or 3/4. Quieter, more fuel efficient.

Third, in the event of needing an extra push against the current or what have you, I have it available. Yes, I realize there are diminishing returns after you near hull speed. Nevertheless, it gives me some comfort, even if illusionary!

I don't have concerns about it being to heavy. Probably delusional on this score too.

Also, got a good deal on it, including getting the Nissan for the Tohatsu price. The Tohatsu is the exact same engine as the Nissan but is cheaper because it carries the Tohatsu name plate. The vendor only had Nissan in stock, so gave me the Tohatsu price when I told him I'd wait.

Bottom line: I loved the new engine this season!
