The original halyards and sheets were of 3/8" line. I want to rplace them. I have been told that 5/16"New England regatta braid line will do just fine for a H25. What does anyone esle think?

Why?

Jim: I am sure that they lighter line would do the job, but why? You could not possibly looking at the cost savings. These lines will last for 10-15 years if you use high quality line and keep it out of the weather as much as possible. One of major problems with thinner line is the effect it has on your hands with you are trying to lift a sail or sheeting in a sail. The thinner the line the more it 'cuts' into your hands. I would stick with the larger line if I were you. You can contact Hunter and ask them the recommended size of the lines for your specific model.

Line size

Stay with the 3/8 ths line. Steve is on the mark. I have the reverse problem where the previous owner went from 3/8 to 7/16 and the halyard is constantly binding in the sheaves. I will change out this spring. Halyards do last forever and I'm not waiting any longer. I don't know about your sheave size but if you go too small the line can jump the groove and get stuck. Just another opinion. Bill

Use Quality Line

Jim, I agree with Steve and Bill...stick with the 3/8 line size...it just works better on this size boat. Use the best quality line you can....the ropes are what holds the boat together!!! :) I have tried many different lines for sheets and halyards on my 25.5. I club race so that lighter weight and low stretch are important but are equally beneficial for cruising. For just cruising, 3/8 NER Sta-Set is a great all-round line for all your applications. Regatta braid is ok for sheets but is a bit stretchier than Sta-Set and the cover on Sta-Set gives more durability. I tried some 5/16 Regatta braid for light air genoa sheets but found that Sta-SetX-Lite a better choice for light air. I use 3/8 Sta-Set X for the main and spinnaker halyards; 3/8 Sta-Set for the main sheet and traveler lines; Sta-Set T-900 for jib halyard and a variety of lines for genoa and spinnaker sheets depending on wind and sailing conditions.
