I'm looking for a 30-40 footer 1980s vintage. I'm thinking of a 1984 Hunter-37. One concern I have is that the cockpit seems a little small for a 37 footer. While ideal for a stormy, wavy passage, I'm concerned that it'll be too small for our very typical day sails with 2-3 adults a a few children. We will be sailing in Lake Erie. Any input would be helpful.

Size?

I sail an '85 37 cutter and reqularly have six people ing the cockpit, tight but not uncomfortable, but it is very sea worthly and safe, having taken me to and from Bermuda twice. Great ship, give it a go.

plenty of room

We often sail with family, which usually means four adults and two children, and find it comfortable. I think six adults would work if one joined the helmsman. The seats are not really long enough for sleeping, other than a nap, but other than that, seem fine. The attached photo link includes two grandchildren (one below where he likes to play)... and four adults... On really mild days some of the family like to sit by the mast and find the sunshine (or shade)... We had eight adults aboard for our test cruise in San Diego Bay, including the surveyor... It was okay.

Beg to differ.

Sanders and Alan are H37C bigots. . . .like me. :) If you have been on a newer Hunter like the 356 or 386 then you know what a big cockpit feels like. You will be disappointed with the H37C. See Sanders' picture with the very narrow stern. Yes, six will fit and we do it often with two or three being smallish. But if you want to tack/jibe then you will be stepping on toes. Fortunately the grandkids are usually playing on deck or below. The side seats are fine for napping so long as you lay against the cabin. So one per side. Two can be quite comfortable behind the wheel. Stern rail seats open things up. And the new Lewmar folding wheel would be the ticket at dock or anchor. Personally I'll stick with a seaworthy cockpit. Yesterday with the 5-footers and 30 degrees of heel off the swells I was reminded why I love my H37C.

Yan, I'm with Ed. The cockpit is what it is

so no surprises at least. I'm having stern rail seats built, that sit over the stern and somewhat outside the cockpit, to try to get a little more elbow room. Scott

37 cutter cockpit

We sail with 4-6 aduls and 2-3 children. When under sail we don't move around that much but when we are not we just remove the wheel from the helm and you get a lot more room to move around. Edson makes a quick remove kit for the wheel. If you are interested in a 37 cutter mine is 4 sale. you can contact me at mfiorito@comcast.net
