I had just brought ...

... a boat through Shinnecock Inlet from Riverhead and delivered it to a marina in Freeport on Monday. It was blowing about 30 kts out of the SW and the seas had built to about 8 to 10 feet. It was a very uncomfortable ride on this 39 foot power boat so I opted to go back on the inside at Moriches Inlet and take the Great South Bay route instead.

Rough day

I generally sail up in Gardiner's Bay, and the forecast for Sunday was pretty mild up there. My wife and I went out for a sail from Three Mile Harbor, and headed up to Plum Gut. The winds kept building, we were on genoa only, and when we got to 29 knots apparent wind, I headed back downwind. But it was exceedingly windy even in Gardiner's, mostly a Northerly, and I imagine it got pretty rough out at sea.

Even Inland...

It was a wild ride even inland in 'Jersey. While we've been out in worse(never by choice)we started out with a full reef and only about 1/3 of the jib. We were in control but just barely during the gusts. A few boats our size and smaller were knocked down and after a couple of hours we decided to call it a day and sit on the shore to watch the antics of other sailors trying to dock(ours was none too pretty either with 25mph winds on the nose..)

Nick,

Are ya home? Greenport? living on the boat? If I drive my kids home to Southold one of these Sundays I'll come look ya up. Lately I've been dropping them off at the Ronkonkoma train station cause its a lot cheaper than driving but that means getting there by 3:30 on Sunday cause thats the last train and I know I'll be out sailing and I'll just have to do the drive

Ted

I have a friend who has a summer house out on Sammy's Beach at Three Mile. Really nice area for sailing, just wish I had a place out there.
