Does anyone have any suggestions on where to install a Sirius Satellite Antenna on a sailboat? If so, what brand/type and location on the boat do you recommend?

XM

Before I installed my antenna, I tried it in different locations around my boat. I found the boom messed with the signal anywhere aft of the mast. I finally installed the antenna underneath the deck as far forward as I could get it. I rarely ever have signal interruption. David

In Front of Mast

I mounted mine just in front of the mast, exiting with the radar through the deck. Never had any problems with interference. Its slightly off to one side of the mast. I use the Sportster model; it's portable so I have a set-up in my car, sailboat and at home. It snaps into a holder that is permanently mounted with antenna and power. Sirius coverage is North America, but the link below gives a better picture. Looks like Hawaii is on the outskirts. Paul

Radome Interference ??

I was going to put my XM antennae on top of my radar arch. Does anyone know if my Raymarine radar radome signals will interfere with the sat reception? This thread has now caused me to rethink this. To run the cable from my nav station to the top of the arch will be a biggish job. To find my sat radio is all screwy would not be good.

Can you use the regular antenna

I am in the same boat (literally). Can you use the regular antenna or do I need to buy the marine version? I was already given an additional kit that included the regular vehicle antenna...I guess I will just have ti try it out and se if I get a signal. I was going to see if it works below deck to avoid making it more complicated. Rob

My Sirius Antennae

I mounted mine *inside* the boat on the shelf above the chart table. I tucked it as far to the outer edge as possible. The fiberglass of the deck offers little interference. The only time I lose reception is when I go through tunnels. :) I did the samething in my jeep. Internal mount on top of the roll bar. The satellite signal passes right through my hardtop. Andy

Strictly contintal US coverage

I believe that the "spotlight" beam antenna on the satellite can give coverage out to 300 nm from the continental US. The FCC has to limit the coverage as other countries do not want "all that western propaganda" beamed to their people cause it makes them get upset.

Car Antenna Is All You Need

Rob, I don't know about the Sirius setup, but my XM antenna is the regular vehicle antenna, and I have no reception problems with it mounted on the forward bulkhead of my C-28, just below the deck overhead. There should be no need to shell out extra $$$ for the "waterproof" marine antenna. Mr. Lucky s/v Second Act

I've used the vehicle antennae with an XM on

the boat, won't work in the cabin but OK on deck except it may need to be moved from side to side as it can be blocked by spars etc as you change direction. Currently I'm using a Terk marine ant. mounted at top of stern rail and have no reception problems. Dockmate mounted his the same and reports good results also. I don't believe radar signals would affect the XM ant other than if the radar physically blocked the ant. XM only claims coverage to 100 NM from the coast on their website.

Sirius Antenna

I am also using my Sirius car antenna on the boat below decks. The antenna is on a shelf up under the deck as far outboard as possible. Full bars on the signal strength. No loss of signal while sailing or swinging at anchor either. Go simple!

Bad reception below deck

Ive had bad reception below deck with mine, 86 Hunter 34, I think I fixing to purchase one from this link I've found. I'm not so sure it is what I need though. They do have a marine antenna on this link also. Tim Welsh Hunter 34 S/V Cabo Wabo
