Want to verify something...If I read correctly, in your book you state the need for a siphon loop between the toilet hand pump and the bowl inlet. I have a sailboat and a PHII toilet without this loop. That 3/4" line is currently about one foot long.

I do have a loop between the Y-valve and the thru-hull discharge. The run between the Y-valve and the holding tank goes up as high as the siphon loop on it's run to the holding tank but without the siphon breaker...no choice there on the run to the tank.

Do I need a siphon loop to replace the short 3/4" hose going into the back of the PHII bowl on my sailboat?

Yes, if your head is installed below the waterline. If the head is above the waterline, it isn't necessary, since the head can't siphon then.

Yes, you do need a vented loop in the intake

It needs to be at least 5-8" above waterline AT ANY ANGLE OF HEEL--which, on most sailboats, means about shoulder high or higher when the boat is at rest. And you do need to put it between the pump and the bowl, which requires replacing the short piece of hose the toilet mfr used to connect 'em.

The above applies to ALL toilet installations, not just your PHII (which, btw, is an excellent choice of toilets!). And it's included in all toilet installation instructions.

Thanks Peggy, wanted to make sure I understood your book.

This looked original. Thanks for mentioning it is the manufacturers standard setup. I guess they assume you will make the correct change; which the previous owner did not...and the surveyor did not catch.

Is this common?

and thanks dog, too

Yes it's common. Toilet mfrs don't include 'em because they're only needed in below-waterline installations. Boat builders SHOULD install 'em, but don't because it adds to their cost. And most owners don't know they're needed because nobody ever bothers to read their owners manuals or the installation instructions when they replace a toilet

If a PO wasn't smart enough to keep the manuals for the equipment on a boat, most can be downloaded and printed from mfrs' websites. You'll find the manual for your PH II here: Raritan PH II and PHE II

To add a question on top of a question :)

Can a siphon wear out? If I pump in wet mode for a while and then pump in dry mode for a while and then leave for 2 days. The next time I try to pump in wet mode, it takes a long long time to draw water...sometimes as many as 30 pumps.
