Another Trick...

some of us have used where there is an intermediate piling between the outer piling and the dock like at our marina. We rig a long line from the cockpit through a snatch block attached to the windward side of the bow and lead back to the cockpit outside of the shrouds and life lines. As you put your stern into the slip you it over to the outer windward static line and clip the line end lead outside onto it. As you back in and the wind blows your bow off, you haul in on the cockpit end of this line using a jib winch if necessary to bring the bow in line. You only get one chance at this so you wait until you're sure you can complete the backing process to hook up as the hooked up line will not let you go around again for a second try!
