The previous owner of my 40.5 modified the reefing system to a standard two line system from a single. He reported that in his opinion the single line had too much internal friction. Since he seemed thoughtful in everything else he did I will assume this modification is a good one. On my V32, I found the single line to be useful and simple, making it easy and quick to tuck in a reef. Of course, it was an entirely different rig and different spar mfg. It could be a pain unless you depowered the sail and it still took low gear on the winch to take it in. Question for 40.5 owners, what do you think of the single line system? Rick D.

Single-line Reef on Yaga

I use my H40.5 single-line reefing all the time and typical get a very good reef set in from the cockpit. I marked the halyard for each reef point. If the wind is above 15 kts, then sometimes I will go to the mast to help get that last little bit in to really tighten the reef so the main is very flat (minimum draft)as Debbie handles the winch. I like my single-line reefing setup and the ease and speed with which I can set a reef.
