I have 1988 H23. I have a roller furler. I want to be able to raise and lower my main sail from the cockpit. I looked at other posts for how to run the lines and hareware. My question is, how do you lower the main sail? Mine will not just drop. I have to pull it down. Do you rig another line to bring it down? If so, how do you rig it. Thanks Lee

lowering main
Cleaning and lubricating the track and slides will do wonders as long as you are pointing in to the wind as earlier stated, I would add that this can be a rather serious matter , if you have ever got in to a situation where you really need to get your main down in a hurry having it not come down can be an education, dont ask me how I know, take care, MIke

Halyard size.
Lee: We have a Hunter 31. It also developed this problem. Hunter recommended a 1/2" main halyard but I found that when we down sized from the 1/2" to 7/16" the main dropped fine. We never had this sort of problem with our original lines. My theory is that the line absorbed enough moisture and swelled up enoungh to cause the extra friction.

Drop and ....what?
Lee, I understand your wish to run everything from the cockpit, but I think you need to address the final issue of dropping sail. What do you do with it when it gets down? Are you planning to put lazy jacks or some similar system on your boat? You cannot afford to just drop the main and let it sprawl all over. How do you intend to gather it in and secure the sail. It may be that there is a limit to your ability to work from the cockpit. I ran the halyards on my h23 to a double stopper block on the cabin. When dropping the main, I release the main halyard and to to the front of the mast to pull it down (alternating folds from side to side) and then roll it into itself and secure it to the boom. I know some people prefer flaking their sail, but this is the original sail, and it's still in good shape. Returning to your topic, I think you have to plan on exiting your cockpit to secure the main sail on an h23. Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

Downsize Halyard
I found the same solution as Steve.The recommended size for my boat was 3/8.I replaced it with 5/16 and it now works great in both directions.
