Since we're talking about the '99 models

I recently downsized from an H23 to a '99 170. Took it out for the first time yesterday and really had a lot of fun. That funky aluminum tiller though. No location for a lock pin so I just jammed it in but still would come loose occasionally. Anybody done any helpful modifications? I guess it was set-up for a tiller extension since there is a plate on the handle end? I will need one but there wasn't an extension in all the stuff.

Tiller a must

You should really try to get an extension for your tiller. I was never, and still am not, a big fan of extensions, but with such a large cockpit on this boat you need that extension. Also, if you're not carrying around much weight, you're probably going to want to position yourself forward some on the bench to balance out the boat better. I have a '02 and I love it! Happy sailing.

Tiller Retention Pin

I experienced the same thing. The darn tiller falls out if you put any forward pressure on it. I noticed in the manual (yes, it is poor but it answers most questions if you study the CAD drawings) that on the CAD drawing for the rudder, a lock pin is shown (though not supplied). When I looked at the top of the rudder (actually the SS housing that the tiller slides into), I noticed a hole predrilled to nowhere, located about 3/4" forward of the rear edge. The tiller did not have a corresponding hole. I slid the tiller in, drilled a 3/16" inch hole and put in a SS Fastpin (3/16" x 1")in. I secured the fastpin to the tiller with a loop of shock cord so I don't loose it. I have attached the image. If I was to do this again, I would drill the hole in from the side. As it is, the square tiller is stuck into an inverted "C" channel (the SS upper portion of the rudder). The pin is only supported on the bottom by the tiller wall. I would like to see the pin go through 2 sides of the support and two sides of the tiller. This is not possible with the pin entering from the top as there is no "bottom support". Tough to explain, and probably unimportant as this has no load bearing at all, so the way I did it is probably fine. See the image to make a long story short. Write with any questions.

Mine came with a cotter pin

My 2002 came with a simple cotter pin that hasn't been a problem. I agree that it is only getting retention strength from the top, but the loads are side to side. The pulling force should be minimal. Chuck Watery Tart

Thanks!

Thanks for your input and photos. UNfortunatel it looks like I'm going to have plenty of time to think as the sailing season here is coming to an end.
