I just ordered a new Simrad WP30 autoplilot to replace my problematic and failing (AGAIN!) ST4000. If anyone has installed one of these in a 29.5 (or similar like a 33.6), what problems or other considerations should I know about before I start?? Thanks for the help in advance -- you guys are the greatest! Fair winds - exciting destinations, Bill Murray Good Faith H29.5 1995 #175

I'll be surprised if there are any.

I've put mine on/off several times. It's so easy you really can't have problems. Great unit IMHO.

Pedestal type?

Installation on a simple, round, 4" pedestal is a snap. Not sure how you attach to the other types. I did not like the clamps that were sent with the unit. I bought one of those 6" heavy rubber connectors in the plumbing section at Lowes. It had better stainless clamps. Then I sectioned the connector so that it fit around the pedestal. It made for a better mount surface and looks good. Only other issue is getting a 12V wire up through the pedestal. And any other wires if you want it attached to GPS or a wind instrument.

No-Hub band

is probaly what Ed is referring to if you are looking in Lowes or any other plumbing supply. Sounds like a good idea. I have the same.

Are you sure?

It's called a "no-hub band"? This is very heavy rubber. It's like a 6-inch piece of pipe and has a 6" ID I think. The ends are thicker going back about 3/8", possibly to keep the bands from slipping off. Since I had to cut a slit lengthwise to get it on the post I just carefully took a section out. The butted ends are under the unit and cannot be seen.

shift lever

I installed one on my 1989 30 footer. It fit great and installed easily. I did, however, have to order a bent shift lever to clear the autopilot motor. It was about 40 bucks from sailnet. I also installed a terminal board inside the pedestal for easy hookup to a gps. Great autopilot. steve
