I'm planning to get a used autopilot (most likely a tp10.) I'm looking at its online manual. For power consumption, it says

0.06A (standby)
0.5A (auto)

I guess auto means you're actually running it and it's steering your boat. So if I have a 100 AH battery (from walmart), does that mean I can running it for 100 hrs (I read that you should only draw down 50% of the battery, so 50 AH divided by .5 = 100)

is the above calculation correct? assuming I'm not going to run anything else with the battery.

You will really need to try it. The 0.5A (auto) mode assumes a default of steer vs idle time. Working uses MUCH more power, so that 0.5 is a certain ratio of the two averaged out. Note the power cord is fused for 10Amps.

Sail trim will REALLY help. The easier it is for YOU to steer, the easier it will be (and more power efficient) the TP will be.

I used a TP 10 for over 4500 miles of cruising river and ocean, and my 40 watt solar panel always kept my battery at near 100%. On an all night crossing, the battery would be down about 10%, but that included LED running lights also.

I have the tp10, and 2 grp 27's. I've used it for 6 days with only ob charging.

a lot depends on how active you set it, which depends on sea state and your point of sail.

dead down wind it does not do well in over a 3' chop. but other than that its been the #1 improvement.
