I am ready to install an autopilot. Has anyone installed a WP10 or WP30 on a 74-83 H30? I am concerned that there is not enough room with the shifter located on the aft side of the steering column. I know the older ST3000 works but it had a thin wheel for the belt. Thanks in advance. and yes I looked thru all 160 archives. Didn't find anything helpful.

Tight fit!

Butch: We just looked at the options for my friends H'30. He decided on the Simrad WP5000. He got this unit at the Pacific Sail Expo for under $500. These units are tried and true. While many of the OTHER companies have had several models the Navico/Simrad WP5000 has severed many sailors for many trouble free years. We walked the marina and took measurements of the Navico/Simrad WP300CX (I have this unit) the Autohelm 3000 & 4000 units but the WP5000 was the thinest. My friend is also getting an extension for the shift lever, which will extend it near the rim of the wheel. This should make shifting easier and help prevent any pinched fingers. I am going to take some pictures when we mount it. I'll post them in the Photo Forum. One of the advantages of this unit (like the WP10/30) is the fact that the compass is built into the unit. This eliminates have to worry about mounting in down below away from anything that is magnetic.

I've Been Wondering the Same Thing...

about the fit on my '78 H33. Anybody have one on a model with the edson helm with engine controls? My alternate is also the WP5000.

Shift lever is the problem.

Dallas: The problem on the H'30 for some of these models was the fact that the shift lever is between the pedestal and the wheel. I do not know what you pedestal looks like. Actually the Simrad WP10/30 could fit on these H'30 but it would be very close.

the levers are on the sides and move bow to stern.

Should be no problem then....

Dallas: If you have the traditional pedestal you should not have any problem. Our H'31 has a Y/S Merriman pedestal. The biggest problem is running the wires down the pedestal. When you mount the W/P on the pedestal there are some shims that are used when the diameter is slightly smaller than their radius. It takes a while to fiddle with mounting on the wheel but is easy. You look at the instructions while you sip a cool beverage. Then you look at the W/P while you sip a cool beverage. You start mounting the W/P while .............. Before you know it you are ready to hook up the wires and it is ready to test.

It Fits

I believe I have the same pedestal (shift lever sticks out to port on the aft side of the pedestal). I managed to fit the WP300CX onto it, although the shifter does come very close to rubbing against the housing. Another option if you don't like the way it fits, is to get the combined shifter/throttle lever from Edson (exepensive - about $600-700).
